<div>First and foremost, it has been an amazing experience joining the CrossFit Scottsdale family.  Everyone has been very receptive to yoga and trying it for the first time.  Each week I see improvement in flexibility, body awareness, and balance.  I think that is the true goal of the yoga class at CFS.  I have been very pleased to see these advancements and I know it will make people better crossfitters and better at life in general. </div>

<div>I&#8217;d like to recognize two individuals that exemplify what yoga is all about in my eyes.  Stephanie Hisle (Mayor Bob&#8217;s wife) and Michael Fischer .  These two individuals have shown a tremendous amount of growth since they took on the program in June.  They&#8217;re consistent with their attendance and never back away from a challenge during class.  Both of them give 100% even if they completed a strenuous WOD right before.  Every week they grow more with their practice and I am honored to have them in class.  Keep up the great Michael and Stephanie, you rock!</div>

<div>Lastly, our Wednesday 9am class is changing to Friday mornings at 9:30am.  If you&#8217;re available on Friday mornings please join me.  This will be an all levels basic vinyasa flow class.  Don&#8217;t forget yoga is for everyone&#8230; that means you too guys!</div>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Introducing CrossFit Scottsdale Yoga Instructor and CrossFit bad ass: Jill Petersen</p>
<p>Jill fell in love with the practice of yoga at the age of 18 in Pueblo, Colorado. As a former gymnast, Jill initially explored yoga for the physical workout. She has since found that yoga also creates internal space for a deep emotional, mental, and spiritual healing. Being a dedicated yogini and taking classes from many inspirational instructors helped Jill realize that she wanted to give the gift of yoga to others. This prompted Jill to complete her RYT-200 teacher training. She attributes her practice and teaching style to be strongly influenced by Ryan and Stephanie Besler. Jill has been CrossFitting for two years after initially being introduced to it by her husband Matt. Jill sees the connections in her athletic performance as a crossfitter and her yoga practice daily. Increased mobility and body awareness are just two of the benefits yoga has to offer. Jill infuses her teaching with enthusiasm, passion, creativity, and a sense of play. She creates a safe space for anyone to practice regardless of age, experience, or physical limitation.</p>
<p><strong>Effective June 1st, we are adding 2 Yoga Classes a week to our weekly programming. Monday nights at 7pm and Wednesday mornings at 9am</strong></p>
<p><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Class Descriptions:</span><br />
<em>Monday nights 7pm Deep Stretch/Yin:</em> A calming and stress-relieving class will help stretch and strengthen the body gradually, emphasizing on building awareness to the breath and the body. This class is practiced at a slower pace with longer holds, fewer movements, and attention to alignment. Good for all levels looking for a soothing, relaxing, and restorative experience, especially those newer to yoga or working with special concerns or injuries.<br />
<em>Wednesday mornings 9am Flow’yin:</em> The style is a basic flow balanced by 30 minutes of Yin yoga. During the flow portion of the class, students will integrate breath and movement, awareness and alignment, and strength and flexibility. During the Yin portion of the class, students will explore longer holds and fewer poses. This is the perfect addition to any morning. You will leave feeling balanced and blissful, flowin’ the rest of the day! Suitable for All Levels.</p>
<p>Jill suggests bringing a yoga mat, water, and an open mind.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Yoga can be intimidating. When I first started practicing, I had no clue about the breadth and depth of yoga. I didn&#8217;t know the difference between Childs Pose and Karma&#8230;. and don&#8217;t even get me started on Sanskrit and yoga class etiquette. I avoided attending a yoga class until I had a few months of practicing to DVDs under my belt. When I showed up for my very first yoga class, I found myself worrying about keeping up.</p>
<p>What I love about CrossFit Scottsdale Yoga is that it makes yoga approachable to the beginner without overwhelming him or her. Classes are small and allow students to move through the poses at their own pace based on their own ability. It offers a solid foundation for any yoga beginner by including the following information: Sanskrit and Hatha Flow basics, benefits of a regular yoga practice, tips for avoiding injury during your CrossFit WOD&#8217;s or yoga practice, and yoga class etiquette. The CrossFit Scottsdale Yoga program is designed to increase flexibility, strength, balance, and muscular endurance complimentary to the needs of a CrossFit athlete. Work on stretches and forms that will improve hip mobility, shoulder flexibility, and over-all well-being in a relaxing and rehabilitative environment.</p>
<p>For those of you who are looking for a more direct route to yoga-land, join us at CrossFit Scottsdale on Friday&#8217;s at 4:30 pm, for a body weight CrossFit WOD and some yoga.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The intense hero WOD’s programmed this week and the resulting soreness I know we are all feeling serves as a perfect backdrop for bringing up every CrossFitter’s favorite tenant,<strong> flexibility</strong>.   The <strong>CrossFit Journal Article</strong> by Roger Harrell, <em>Stretching and Flexibility</em>, points out that flexibility does not come with strength training but that in fact strength training without stretching can lead to a dramatic reduction in flexibility.  Taken to the extreme (aka CrossFit hero WODs) lack of flexibility can actually result in the loss of high-performance function (think overhead squats).  So basically intense training without proper stretching as a counter balance will lead to a deterioration in performance.</p>
<p>So what do you as a CrossFitter need to do?&#8230;Commit to stretching daily if not multiple times daily.  Even a couple of daily but short 10-15 minute stretching sessions will lead to increased gains in flexibility and ultimately gains in performance.  As a CrossFitter you need to stretch everything but additional attention should be paid to the shoulders, core and hips.  Our CrossFit Scottsdale Yoga classes are designed to pay special attention to the areas and will give you ideas for stretches that you can easily incorporate into a daily routine.   Classes are offered Wednesdays at 6pm and Fridays at 4:30pm conveniently before the new strength class.   So come<strong><em> flex</em></strong> your muscles as often as you can.</p>

At the beginning of many yoga classes students are asked to set an intention for their practice for that day.  The intention can be anything from staying focused on what is occurring on one’s mat instead of worrying about all the things going on off the mat out in the world.  It could be trying to use that day’s practice to work towards a greater degree of linking movement with breath.  Or an intention can be as simple as to try to smile throughout the entirety of the practice despite the challenge of the poses. This act of setting an intention is what many believe separates yoga from pure exercise.</p>
<p>CrossFit also utilizes intentions to separate itself from traditional exercise.  Every WOD has its own intention whether it be a chipper for time, a Tabbatta for reps, or lift for max weight.  In CrossFit as in yoga we are always working to achieve beyond just physical results.  You have an outlet in which to strive for something more while being held accountable.  Our CrossFit Scottsdale community provides an amazing opportunity for supportive accountability.  I encourage you all to share your goals and intentions both physical and personal with your fellow Scottsdale CrossFitters and coaches.  You will find a unique support network no matter what the goal may be.  It could be to survive Army bootcamp, to do your first unassisted pull-up, to open your own business, to lose weight, to be a more patient parent or to run a marathon.  At CrossFit Scottsdale you receive so much more than just the push to achieve physical results.</p>
<p>When I began coaching the CrossFit Scottsdale yoga class my intent was to share my passion for yoga with the CrossFit Scottsdale community in the hope that I could contribute to building more well rounded athletes.  I am very excited about adding a second weekly CrossFit Scottsdale yoga class Wednesday nights at 6pm.  I am thrilled by the opportunity to take my intention further.  I am excited to reach new students and take other students to a new level.  This class is open to new students and all levels. Thank you CrossFit Scottsdale for supporting my intention.
